International Paper began its activity in Russia in 1998. The company focuses on the production and sale of office and offset paper, cardboard for packaging of liquid food products, thermo-mechanical pulp. The production is concentrated at an own company enterprise in Svetogorsk. The company spent over 700 million US dollars to upgrade the facility. In Russia International Paper is co-owner of a parity joint venture, the Ilim Group, the largest partnership with foreign participation in the Russian forest industry. The most well-known brands of International Paper Russia are Ballet and SvetoCopy.
The forest management operations of International Paper in Russia are concentrated at the enterprise in Tikhvin (Tikhvin KLPH, Leningrad Oblast). International Paper computerized the whole process of planning, drafting cost estimates, forest use analysis, choosing the most rational variants of cuttings, both in economic and environmental terms. To this end an advanced GIS system based on ArcGis was introduced.
Timber harvesting is carried out taking into account the biodiversity conservation requirements. The conditions for long-term use of forest land are being created.

With the direct participation of International Paper, a Laboratory for sustainable development opened at the Moscow School of Management “SKOLKOVO”, the first expert center in the country where examples of best practices are used for education of the future business leaders of Russia.
International Paper is committed to promote the idea of sustainable forest management and its successful experience in Russia, involving all stakeholders: the public, representatives of forestry, government agencies. The company is the initiator, organizer and active participant in various venues to share best practices in the forest industry, including master classes, exhibitions and workshops devoted to intensive models of forest management and its advantages in Russia. One such event was a workshop on “Intensive forestry:an obligation or a consious necessity”, held in 2014 in Tikhvinskoye lesnichestvo in Leningrad Oblast. The representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Forestry Department of Northwest Federal District, Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Roslesinforg”, World Wildlife Fund, Ilim Group, St. Petersburg State University and representatives from the forest industry took part in it. The workshop was held under the guidance of the expert center “Lesnaya Alternativa” (P. V. Bezverkhov). In 2015, International Paper also was the co-organizer of the first international business forum of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for Russia and the CIS countries in collaboration with Tetra Pak.
International Paper is a member of forums and working groups on improvement of forest legislation including introduction of intensive forestry at the federal and regional levels. In particular, International Paper is a member of a working group at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment that deals with forest legislation improvement, including issues of implementing sustainable forest management in Russia.
